From what I have seen on this video (and also personal observations of V. velutina in Hong Kong) this species does not appear to be a bigger threat to Apis than V. crabro, wand it looks like it is not as good at catching bees as V. orientalis. Hype aside, how much of a threat is this species compared to endemic European Vespa species?

Hello Mark,

Vespa Velutina is a completely different Hornet from Vespa Crabo (European Hornet). It hovers and does not land, not allowing the Bees to attack as with Vespa Crabo.

Vespa velutina has over 2000 active Hornets as compared with 200 with Vc. As you see in the Video, Very few bees are collecting Nectar and Honey out of fear. In only a few days the colony will have depleted the reserve and collapse.

15 Vv and the colony is lost. Approx 300 Queens expand the territory in the following year. Just do the math.
