Xesús believes fostering relationships between scientists and beekeepers alike is an important strategy going forward allowing adequate dissemination and socialization of scientific results  The information provided on the Vespa velutina should be: correct, relevant, accessible, effective and based on scientific evidence. To effectively combat or manage this problem, society needs scientists that mix with the public explaining, surprising and enthusing.

Xesús is a beekeeper and started the first experimental Apiary called ‘Velvet Apiary Velutina Veterinary Research’. The first apiary registered to research Asian hornet presence and honey bees response, where he recently installed a bee counter device to monitor the impact of Vespa velutina in honey bee colonies.  He first began working with beekeepers 10 years ago and now carries out a project with beekeepers called VES PAR Vespa velutina partipiary where scientists and beekeepers try to answer from an honest point of view all questions related to VESPA VELUTINA  and consequents on honey bees.

Here is an example of some of the recent research projects carried out on the by Xesús

  • 2015-2016 He developed a course for firefighters to enable a safe method to trap and catch Vespa velutina nests. Read more here
  • During 2017 successfully obtained pure Vespa velutina venom in a humane way. This venom will be analysed by another research group.
  • 2017 involved in a project related to toxic bating against Vespa velutina carried out in University of Santiago de Compostela and funded by Deputación de A Coruña Government.
  • Testing on a device to protect apiaries for a private enterprise.
  • In 2017 micro CT images of the Vespa velutina were obtained. See images and read more here
  • During 2017, 2018 and 2019 successful testing was carried out on a range of different commercial traps available on the market to catch Vespa velutina with surprising results talking about selectivity. These results will be published soon.
